Situation
Looking to quickly upgrade their infrastructure to ensure critical systems and patient data are available in the event of data loss or system failures, a federal health organization was interested in implementing Dell PowerProtect Data Manager 5500 (DM5500) with Dell VxRail. But before deploying the new solution, the organization wanted to be able to test and determine the recovery time and accessibility of large virtual machines that were similar to the ones in their environment, as they had specific backup and recovery requirements that needed to be met. Unfortunately, at that time, DM5500 was so new that it wasn't available in any technology evaluation lab for testing.
The health organization turned to WWT to help find a way for them to conduct a proof of concept (POC) under severe time restrictions.
Solution
Knowing what the client wanted to accomplish, we leveraged our relationship with Dell Technologies to set up an advanced version of the DM5500 in our Advanced Technology Center (ATC) before any other technology evaluation lab in the world.
We then configured the DM5500 to application-specific mount points so that we could test how the solution backed up multiple large virtual machines (approximately 400Gb in size) on Dell VXRail E660F all-flash hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI). During the test, we recorded the start time to the completed restore time.
The POC, which involved several specific points with the most demanding requirements, was conducted within four days of the initial request — well within the client's strict timeframe.
Outcomes and benefits
As a result, the federal health organization was not only able to gain access to the new product before anyone else but could also prove that the solution would work for them before they procured it, all within a very tight timeframe and meeting difficult, exacting requirements.
The health organization was also able to move through the technology selection process at light speed and obtained the information they needed to act decisively and with great confidence as they set up their new, advanced infrastructure that better fulfilled their current and future needs.
