About the Medical Insurance Company

This 80-year-old nonprofit organization serves more than 720,000 members and is the largest health insurer in its state. As an independent licensee of a major health insurance plan, its mission is to improve the lives of its members and the health of the state in which it operates.

The Challenge

The organization was in a period of disruptive IT transformation with many initiatives being implemented concurrently.  The IT team aimed to improve operational functions, enhance ease of system access by employees and elevate their level of customer service. Its legacy enterprise mobility management (EMM) software no longer met the organization's technical or compliance needs. Considerable improvement and efficiencies to its virtual desktop platform were needed, maintaining compliance with HIPAA Mobile Device Policy was mandatory and there was compliance pressure to migrate to Windows 10.

From an end-user perspective, remote sales representatives, satellite locations and busy executives who traveled frequently required secure mobile access to key IT systems from all types of mobile devices, including cell phones and iPads.

WWT Solution

The organization turned to WWT to help design and implement a transformative solution to its numerous system needs. To fully identify and prioritize initiatives, WWT began a solution discovery, complete with an assessment of current IT systems, identification of end-user computing workspace and mobile device management requirements, and a comprehensive virtual desktop assessment. Through several demonstrations using WWT's state-of-the-art Advanced Technology Center (ATC), WWT educated the organization's IT team on new technologies and provided proof of secure access to systems from mobile devices in the lab environment.

Workspace ONE deployment was key to the WWT solution. WWT completed system design and infrastructure, and key hardware, software and network upgrades were planned and executed in preparation for the cloud-based 1,500-user Workspace ONE Advanced license and VMware Horizon Enterprise deployments. WWT configured Workspace ONE to ensure business and technical requirements were met and migrated the organization from its legacy EMM platform to Workspace One with on-going rollout and expansion support for Windows 10 management. Workspace ONE was integrated with Okta for single sign-on (SSO), further improving system security and ease of use for end users. As mobile devices continue to be refreshed, they are deployed under Workspace ONE.

In addition to mobile device management, the organization recognizes the value of several other Workspace ONE features, including the unified application portal and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) deployment. It plans to implement those in the future.

Business Outcomes

Workspace ONE and the WWT solution provided several key benefits to the insurer:

  • Improved employee productivity
  • Ensured regulatory compliance and device control without impacting the end-user experience
  • Modernized IT infrastructure
  • Strengthened security posture
  • Primed for rollout of SaaS apps and app catalog
  • Efficient reporting on infrastructure optimization and performance monitoring

WWT's solution allows the insurer to better meet business needs through growth, changing devices and operational staff constraints.
