Challenge

A global media and technology company wanted to shift its AWS spend into developing its own cloud platform for internal customers. As an existing Dell customer, the company turned to the technology manufacturer to help build one integrated solution that would deliver the same high-quality customer experience as AWS, in-house. Due to the complexity of the project, Dell was hesitant to involve additional partners. However, as it started delivering equipment, the media and technology company realized it wasn't able to consume the hardware as quickly as it was being shipped, resulting in a backlog of inventory that Dell needed to move.

Solution

With expertise in supply chain services and network engineering, WWT pursued this opportunity to show Dell and its client the value we could bring to both parties if included in the cloud platform project. We held account strategy sessions with Dell to discuss how we could support and help grow the customer account. When we met with the media company, we showcased our labs and services capabilities, including videos of our integration centers.

Throughout the 18- to 24-month process, we proved our abilities in logistics and engineering, resulting in a significant tech refresh project consisting of Dell servers and VxRail.

Outcomes

WWT plays an integral role in some of the world's largest supply chains due to our expert staff and customized supply chain and integration services. Our services can help customers accelerate time to market, optimize costs, scale faster, and increase predictability and visibility of large, multisite rollouts. With more than four million square feet of warehouse and integration space spread across three continents, we're able to configure more than 30,000 systems per week.

In this specific engagement, a key differentiator was our Just-in-Time (JIT) delivery service, which allows WWT to keep pace with a customer's consumption patterns and engineering activities. By leveraging this service, Dell can manufacture and ship the equipment off their production lines and the media and technology company can schedule and receive the shipments at its data center — rather than its internal warehouses — when they need it. This service reduces the amount of inventory "sitting" along the supply chain and can help prevent bottlenecks at the receiving site.

Additionally, WWT is providing network engineering support to help Dell and its client accelerate the deployment of the cloud platform. The team has also leveraged the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) for testing HCI solutions.
