Private Cloud Ideation Workshop

The Private Cloud Ideation Workshop is designed to guide IT professionals through the complexities of designing a new on-premises hypervisor platform such as Hyper-V, Nutanix, OpenShift Virtualization, VMware and others that will ultimately be used to support a migration from a legacy platform.

This workshop equips participants with the essential knowledge to assess their current infrastructure, plan strategically for migration and execute the transition with minimal disruption. Understanding the new destination environment and its nuances is critical for success and understanding level of effort, space requirements, and cost.

What to Expect

Participants will learn about design considerations, hardware and software requirements, and operational best practices to maintain system performance and scalability post-migration. The workshop itself will focus on gathering all the data necessary to develop a realistic strategy.

The final output of the workshop is a 5-page document that helps detail the considerations for the new environment and a high-level approach to the design.

  • Voice of the customer
  • Integration reviews
  • General hardware and software considerations
  • Risk assessment and mitigation
  • And more

Goals & Objectives

This workshop will equip participants with the skills to plan and execute complex migrations between on-premises hypervisors; focusing on strategic planning, risk management, and practical execution steps. The source and destination hypervisors considered here can include Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, OpenShift Virtualization, VMware vSphere and others.

Note: This workshop is a follow-up to the Virtualization Strategy Briefing and assumes the customer has that level of understanding.  Additionally, this briefing requires an export of the current state of the infrastructure via the appropriate export tool.

Workshop format

The workshop is designed to create a strategy that can be used to understand the full scope of migration.

  • Voice of the Customer
    • Stakeholder introductions
    • Review key challenges, timeline and "state of the union"
  • Integration Reviews
    • Discuss how these are done today and if changes are expected
      • Backups
      • Disaster Recovery
      • Automation
      • Security
      • Network
      • Storage
  • Migration Readiness and Planning
    • Assessing infrastructure, defining goals and understanding migration scope
    • Review source environment export and massage data for analysis
  • General Hardware and Software Considerations
    • Discussing hardware/software requirements and licensing for a migration
      • Compute / Storage / Network / Facilities
      • Destination hypervisor licensing
  • Design and Implementation Strategies
    • Tailored advice on cluster configuration, storage and network design

Materials and support

  • Participants will need to provide an an appropriate export (RVtools or similar .csv output) of the environment being analyzed.
  • A 5-page Future State Ideation Document will be the output from the workshop and delivered within 5 business days of the workshop.

Who should attend?

IT Leaders and Managers, Enterprise Architects, Infrastructure Engineers and Project Managers

Benefits

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the strategic, operational and technical considerations for migrating between hypervisors.
  • Walk away with practical strategies for managing risk, executing migrations smoothly and ensuring operational continuity post-migration.
